APRILIA MOTORCYCLE EICMA 2010 NOVELTIES - TUONO V4 R

After creating the best superbike of the new millennium, Aprilia revolutionises the supersports naked segment with its astonishing new Tuono V4R.

A bike that goes beyond the wildest dreams of even the most hardcore enthusiasts - the rider who, given the chance, would use a race bike just to go for a coffee.

For riders like these and for those with power in their veins, Aprilia has created a motorcycle with the indomitable spirit of the RSV4 in a feline body that is in its element when accelerating and braking with unimaginable violence, that eats up curves of any radius and swallows straights whole.

Characterised by the brazen exhibition of the V4 65° engine framed by the brushed aluminium elements of the dual beam frame, the Tuono V4 is a naked dressed with the bare necessities to mount up and instruct according to the rider's capabilities.

Adding yet another touch of aggressiveness is the aerodynamic new top fairing tipped with two polyelliptical headlights at the sharp end, which gives the bike the unequivocally mean, daunting stare that you'd expect from a machine with an incredible 162 horsepower.

Tuono V4R boasts power never before installed on a naked, obtained by reconfiguring the RSV4 Factory APRC SE four V cylinder.

The Tuono V4R inherits features from the Special Edition including the new exhaust system with bypass valve, which is two kilos lighter than the system used on the RSV4 R, and latest generation Ride by Wire throttle control.

Differences from its race track sibling are closer spacing between the three first gear ratios a maximum torque of 110 Nm on tap 1000 rpm lower.

The Tuono V4R maintains the family feeling with the WSBK double title champion's tail fairing, saddle, tank and side panels, one of the best examples of made in Italy motorcycle design in the last decade for its formal beauty and functionality ratio. The racer, because that is what anyone who approaches a fireball like this one should be called, will be taming this beast from a riding position tailored to create a symbiotic relationship between the body and the bike, for unparalleled feedback through the three points of contact - the saddle, footpegs and handlebars.

Staying in the saddle and gripping the biconical handlebar, the rider comes into contact with the APRC (Aprilia Performance Ride Control) joystick, the second generation electronic dynamics control package developed by Aprilia to get as close as possible to the physical limits of riding: State-of-the-art in bike dynamics performance controls, a patented system which makes the winning Superbike technology available to any biking enthusiast. All of this with absolutely simple and intuitive management which allows the Tuono V4R to be customised every time the rider gets on it, making it a truly "tailored" bike for each rider, the desired performance and the riding conditions.

APRC is based on an automotive inertia sensor platform, with two gyrometers and two accelerometers allowing the ECU to determine the dynamic state of the motorcycle and control engine torque accordingly to help the rider exploit the full performance potential of the bike in all conditions.

The APRC package includes ATC traction control (Aprilia Traction Control), with eight selectable levels, which controls sliding when accelerating out of a curve in relation to bank angle and throttle aperture, AWC (Aprilia Wheelie Control), which helps the rider control extreme wheelying by gradually bringing the front wheel back to the ground, and AQS (Aprilia Quick Shift), which allows instantaneous upshifts without closing the throttle or using the clutch. Completing the suite of four functions is the most exhilarating of all: ALC (Aprilia Launch Control).

Simultaneously pressing both buttons on the joystick on the left hand handlebar arms the system, as confirmed by the specific message on the display. From this moment on, all 162 horsepower of the beast from Noale are ready to slingshot the Tuono V4R like a missile as soon as the rider releases the clutch, unleashing the astonishing power onto the tarmac through every available square millimetre of the 190/50 rear tyre.
For every day street riding and for those who are not yet accustomed to the miracles of the vehicle's dynamics software, Tuono V4R offers great satisfaction from a biking hardware point of view.

In fact, the extraordinary new Aprilia naked is equipped with the best components available on the market: Brembo brake system with radial callipers and 320 mm floating discs at the front (220 mm at the rear), aluminium wheels with an all-new design weighing 2 Kg less than those on the RSV4R, Sachs upside down front fork with 43 mm stanchions coated with titanium nitride for reduced friction, and Sachs shock absorber with separate piggy back nitrogen canister featuring adjustable spring preload, compression and rebound damping and length, to modify the setup of the bike to suit different riding styles or for two-up use.

APRILIA MOTORCYCLE MXV 450


All design solutions on the uncompromising MXV 450 have been dictated by the need to achieve the highest possible level of performance while extending the bike’s range of use. The under-seat exhaust, for example, features a brand new path for better motocross performance with more torque at lower revs.


Valve gear based on a single overhead cam and four titanium valves per cylinder gives the best possible compromise between compactness, light weight and performance. Thanks to its advanced technology the 45.2 engine is extremely civilized and silent running even in this motocross version, and complies easily with FIM rules for noise emissions (94 dB threshold).

The MXV 450 affords beautifully easy access for maintenance (plugs, oil filter, air filter), and boasts extended maintenance intervals, far above the average.


The engine has a dry sump lubrication system with the oil tank integrated inside the crankcase. Elimination of the external oil tank and its connecting pipes has led to a further reduction in weight.


The starter motor has been eliminated for the same reason. Starting is by kick-start only in order to minimize weight.

The salient specifications of the 45.2 engine on the new MXV:

o Dry sump lubrication with the oil tank integrated inside the crankcase. Separate lubrication for gearbox and engine to keep oil efficient for longer.

CHASSIS: LIGHTER THAN EVER
The dimensions of the perimeter frame have been optimized for motocross use, and the entire frame has been developed to complement the engine. Its design is unique among motocross frames. A tubular steel trellis is interference fitted to pressed aluminum side plates to form a single structure. The engine also forms an integral part of the chassis, acting as a load-bearing element and contributing to exceptional overall rigidity.


Particular care has been taken over weight distribution. Weight has been centralized as far as possible to improve agility under all conditions.


Weight reduction (one of the most important aspects of any motocross bike) was central to the design of every part of the MXV, from disc brake to frame.


The swingarm has been designed for maximum lightness and elasticity and incorporates hydroformed members. The rising rate linkage system is damped by a fully adjustable Sachs racing monoshock with two damping settings for high and low speed riding.

The Marzocchi upside down fork has 50 mm stanchions and is also calibrated for motocross. The fork is fully adjustable, so that you can set up your own suspension action exactly as you want it.
The fuel tank has been redesigned to keep the bike’s centre of gravity as near as possible to the physical centre of the machine. Attention has also been given to eliminating protruding parts to reduce width and improve ergonomics.


The centralization of weight has also influenced the design of the filter box. The filter is now located at the front of the bike, leaving the fuel tank more space to extend back over the rear shock absorber.


The filter box also holds the throttle bodies and facilitates filter changing.
The ECU and all the components of the electrical system are also housed securely inside the filter box.


The exhaust system, under-seat silencer and twin tail pipes are made entirely from titanium (pipes and silencer).


The minimal electrical system is battery-less, and fully integrated inside the filter box. Engine and electrical system therefore form a single block.

The two-tone stepped seat helps the rider hold his position at all times.

BRAKES
The unrivalled technology and performance of the chassis is supported by a fantastic braking system. The MXV is equipped with Nissin floating calipers and super-lightweight wavy discs (270 mm at the front), for unrivalled braking control in even the most challenging conditions. A 240 mm rear disc with single piston Nissin caliper provides the perfect balance between stopping power and ease of control.

Three performance modes, Sport, Touring and Rain, can be selected on the move from a switch on the handlebars (with the throttle closed for safety reasons). The Dorsoduro changes its character radically, depending on what mode you select. Sport mode gives you aggressive instant power; Touring mode gives you a smoother action, better suited to relaxed long distance riding; and Rain mode gives you ultimate safety slippery surfaces.


The Tri-Map electronic throttle also means smoother, more consistent power thanks to more accurate and precise throttle control based on parameters including engine speed, gear selection, air flow, throttle position and temperature. The V twin engine performs superbly at low and medium revs and even at partial throttle openings, situations typical of the sort of riding the Dorsoduro 750 supermotard is designed for.


Whatever mapping you select, the engine is always ready to deliver the best possible performance in terms of acceleration and rev range, giving you an amazingly satisfying and entertaining ride.


The exhaust is made entirely from stainless steel. The collector pipes meet in a single silencer under the seat before splitting again into two tail pipes. The large volume of the exhaust system also aids engine breathing and boosts efficiency.


A latest generation ECU manages all engine parameters, with a CAN (Controlled Area Network) line carrying all signals to an instrument cluster that incorporates a self-diagnostic terminal. Because the CAN line uses only two wires to transfer all the necessary data, the Dorsoduro’s electrical system is beautifully simple and a major factor in the bike’s impressively light weight.


Thanks to its advanced electronic and mechanical technology, the Aprilia V twin engine develops 92 HP at 8,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 60.48 ft. lbs. at 4,500 rpm. These figures enable the Dorsoduro to compete directly with motorcycles powered by far bigger engines.

FRAME: PERFECT BALANCE
Aprilia motorcycles have always been acclaimed for the excellent chassis designs. The Dorsoduro 750 is no exception, thanks to a chassis that makes it the best balanced and most effective bike of its type. The new Dorsoduro is easy and intuitive to ride despite its blistering performance. It is designed to be ridden at the limit under all conditions, to perform extreme power slides, and to blast out of bends under full power. The secret lies in an ultra-responsive chassis, whose ergonomics suit riders of all statures and allow you to “take it to the limit” and enjoy the thrills of a motorcycle built for pure entertainment.


The frame incorporates all of Aprilia’s vast racing experience, and makes full use of the latest mixed steel and aluminum designs derived from the world of Supermotard World Championship racing. The top half of the frame is a tubular steel trellis. This is secured to generous aluminum side members by special high strength bolts. The resulting structure is extremely rigid and lightweight, and provides the best possible means of harnessing the exuberant power of the Aprilia V90 engine while still communicating a strong impression of lightness, high technology and Italian style.


Continuous co-operation between engine and frame designers has led to the perfection of high-tech, performance-oriented solutions and to total integration between engine and frame. The intelligent design solutions applied to Aprilia’s V twin engine have made it shorter than ever, permitting the development of a rational and efficient frame and a superbly agile and incredibly responsive motorcycle.


The lateral position and acute angle of the rear monoshock has freed up the space needed to ensure optimum exhaust geometry without any increase in the bike’s overall length, and without subjecting the monoshock to thermal stress. The aluminum swingarm is robust enough to withstand the asymmetric stresses generated by the lateral positioning of the rear suspension. The swingarm has been specially developed to satisfy the needs of a supermotard like the Dorsoduro 750, and combines excellent torsional rigidity with the elasticity needed for precision under acceleration and intuitive control under changing conditions.

SUSPENSION: EFFECTIVE ON ALL SURFACES
Optimum suspension setup has always been one of the strong points of the Aprilia design and testing team. The 43 mm upside down fork features shell-cast bottom outers with radial calipers mountings, and offers adjustments for spring preload and rebound damping. This sophisticated fork offers a superb sliding action and a wheel travel of 160 mm in line with the latest trends in supermotard racing. Both yokes are forged, and the top yoke is also anodized to match the Dorsoduro’s high level of finish.


The laterally offset monoshock pivots directly on the swingarm in a cantilever configuration, and is also adjustable in spring preload and rebound damping. Rear wheel travel is 160 mm, again in keeping the requirements of a top level supermotard, on which effective, controlled long stroke suspension is a must.

BRAKES: RACING TECHNOLOGY
The Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 is equipped with the best braking technology currently available. The front brakes feature 4-piston radial calipers, state-of-the-art for the motard market. The lightweight, 320 mm wave discs ensure shorter than ever stopping distances. The bike’s aggressive stopping power is emphasized by the mean look of the braking system, in keeping with the Dorsoduro’s overall styling.


The rear brakes incorporate another wave disc, 240 mm in diameter this time, plus a single piston caliper. Both the front and rear brakes are fitted with aeronautical type metal braided brake lines to eliminate the sponginess associated with conventional rubber hoses and to deliver maximum braking precision.

COMPONENTS
Supermotards are always no-frills machines, and sometimes quite spartan. This, however, does not mean having to do without top quality components and attention to detail. Here too Aprilia stands apart from the competition by adopting a level of equipment worthy of a true market leader:

- Matrix instrumentation. The mixed analog/digital instrument cluster receives data over a CAN line and incorporates a memory that forms an integral part of the diagnostics system. The ultra-compact instruments feature a modern design and are extremely light in weight. All functions can be accessed and controlled from the handlebars. The LED backlighting is white in the analog area and red in the digital area, and can be adjusted to three levels of brightness.
- Dual taper anodized aluminum handlebars exactly like those fitted to Aprilia’s racing supermotards. This super-lightweight component is specially designed for optimum dynamic control.

The Aprilia RSV4 is powered by the most revolutionary and most powerful engine ever developed by Aprilia. This 65-degree V-Four unit is based on an architecture that is unique in the world of supersport motorcycles, and features refined engineering combined with prestigious materials and advanced electronic management solutions.

The new engine uses multi-mapping ride-by-wire technology, a solution that opens up new horizons in engine control, and offers virtually infinite opportunities for power delivery and traction control (present as standard on the racing version).


The 2009 Aprilia RSV4 has all the right componentry for it to be a serious contender on the racetrack.
The choice of a narrow V-layout has led to the development of an incredibly narrow engine. This in turn has permitted weight to be centralised and chassis performance dramatically improved (thanks to a short wheelbase and long swingarm). The narrow V-Four configuration permits a longer stroke to be used, with clear benefits in terms of improved engine breathing. High engine speeds can therefore be reached without having to extend the width of the crankcase. This is fundamentally important to aerodynamics and maneuverability (two characteristics for which Aprilia motorcycles have always been universally acclaimed).

The monobloc cylinder block features integrated liners for maximum rigidity and consistent efficiency. The air intake trumpets are variable in length. Each bank of cylinders has a servomotor dedicated exclusively to the operation of their two throttle bodies. The aperture of the four butterfly valves, and therefore the volume of air inducted, can therefore be controlled independently. This solution opens up new horizons in electronic engine and power management, resulting in truly advanced integral traction control. A cassette type gearbox and a slipper clutch demonstrate the racing character of this engine.

The Aprilia RSV4 has been designed and developed with competition in mind, and naturally offers all the adjustments normally found on racing machines. In particular, this most powerful Aprilia ever made stands out for its complete range of chassis adjustments. The variable geometry frame not only allows you to change parameters like headstock angle (thanks to interchangeable steering bushings), but even lets you adjust swingarm and engine position. Racing technology has been used for all aspects of construction. The RSV4's aluminium frame and swingarm are constructed from a clever mix of thick-walled parts and variable section sheet.

Ohlins suspension on both ends, Brembo Monoblocs, a V-Four motor! I'll take two please!

All components are naturally of the highest caliber. They include an Ohlins fork, rear monoshock and steering damper, Brembo monobloc brake calipers and forged aluminium wheels.

The styling of the Aprilia RSV4 has followed the same approach as the rest of the design. The RSV4's racing character is clear from every component, and from the absence of solutions chosen only for appearances. As a result the overall design of the RSV4 and the advanced technology of its component parts merge into a uniquely harmonious whole that is superbly functional on the racetrack - the natural habitat of this latest Aprilia.

The fairing has been developed in the wind tunnel. Minimal in size, it in no way detracts from the stunning technology of the engine. The frame/engine system is fully visible and bulges like muscles beyond the fairing.

The triple headlight cluster makes the RSV4 instantly recognisable and unique from the very first glance.

The superbly lightweight tail slopes upwards to emphasise the dynamic nature of the Aprilia RSV4. Even when stationary, the bike simply exudes a desire for speed and competition.

APRILIA MOTORCYCLE leonardo 500 ditech


Aprilia has shown a new prototype at the Milan Show which demonstrates that they are getting some significant gains from their Direct Injection 2-stroke technology that, until now, we've only seen in a 50cc scooter.

Not so long ago, ever tightening noise and emission laws looked as if they spelt the end of the 2-stroke on our roads. The legendary Aprilia RS250 has already ceased production. However, Aprilia have been fighting back with their DiTech system that produces significantly more power, better fuel economy and better emissions than the equivalent 4-stroke.

It appears that Aprilia have now succeeded in leveraging their DiTech techno into a light and compact 500cc 2-stroke single-cylinder engine producing some stunning performance figures:
- power of 50bhp at 6,500rpm,
- torque of 65Nm at 6,000rpm,
- fuel consumption at 107mpg for the ECE 40 cycle, and 96mpg at 70mph!
And it'll meet the Euro 3 emission laws due in 2006.

It seems the 2-stroke is far from dead.

The prototype on show was a good looking 500cc ultra-light sports scooter that illustrates the increasing convergence of the scooter and motorcycle worlds. It has:
- belt driven Continuously Variable Transmission plus button selected sequential manual,
- frame mounted engine (for less unsprung weight),
- rigid aluminum frame,
- mono shock, single sided swingarm with belt final drive,
- disc brakes front (double) and rear (single),
- front lights from the new RSV Mille, rear LEDs.
- promised luggage, satellite navigation and ABS (anti-lock brake system) options.
- tank range of up to 450 miles,
- top speed of 105mph,
- Standing 1/4 mile in 12.5 seconds (An '02 Yamaha R1 only does it in 11.1 seconds)
- dry weight of only 175kg.

Does all this sound too good to be true? Well, it is only a prototype, but if a production version came anywhere close to these figures, it'll clearly make the opposition obsolete at a stroke (2-stroke at that).
