Traverston Motorcycle V-Rex

3/17/2008
By Adam Waheed

The weather couldn't be more gorgeous as I motor down one of Orange County, California's mystifying backroads. With the chrome trimmed throttle fully wrapped, the liquid-cooled V-Twin beneath me hurls forward at a startling rate. The ferocious roar emitting out of the torpedo-shaped muffler builds quickly, yet contradicts the futuristic styling of this burgundy stunner I'm seated on. With the rattle of the engines two big power pulses increasing to an almost sportbike-like crescendo, I grab an up-shift while glancing down at the Harley-Davidson speedometer as the needle slams past the century mark.

But this ain't no Harley. True, it does share a fair amount of Milwaukee DNA as evidenced by the high-revving V-Rod-sourced powertrain, elegant instrumentation and chromed-out switchgear. However, with the machine's chiseled body panels, stuffed elongated stance and eccentric suspension componentry, it looks as if it were plucked right off the floor of Tokyo's concept motorcycle show.

Despite the bevy of people that gravitate to the bike like Keith Richards to a bottle of liquor, a one-off prototype this bike is not.

The Travertson V-Rex began as a fairy tale two-wheeled creation engineered in the binary world by Australian designer Tim Cameron. A life-long motorcycle rider and enthusiast, Cameron has been sketching motorcycles since he was a school boy.

"A lot of my influences come from aviation and science fiction," says Cameron. "I don't pay too much attention to categories and styles of bikes. I've used motocross bike features on road bike designs and as long as it works visually, I'll use it. I just want to create something that leaps off the page."

Like many motorcycle enthusiasts, Cameron was fed up with the stagnant state of cruiser design, so when sketching his 'Dream Bike', one of his objectives was to try and move contemporary cruiser design into the new millennium.

"Currently, cruisers appear to be in stuck some kind of generic time warp," said Cameron. "I wanted to project them into the future rather than poke around in the past for that look that I was after."

Cameron never anticipated his design evolving past the computer screen. But when a certain Frenchman by the name of Christian Travert stumbled upon the 3D renderings on the Web, Cameron's digital vision was about to transform itself into moving metal.

Travert emailed Cameron with the subject line "Dream Bike on the Streets of America". And after he name-dropped his 227 mph, jet engine-powered Y2K motorcycle that he helped build, Cameron knew Travert was legit.

"At first, I studied Tim's rendering for a few weeks. I finally found technical solutions to accommodate the look and ride-ability," says Travert. "From day one I was looking for production."

Thousands of hours later, the first production V-Rex rolled out of the Travert's 12-employee, Fort Lauderdale, Florida factory and into the hands of WeRentMotorcycles.com, owner Jack Reynolds. Not one to be stingy, The Newport Beach, California-based business rents the machine to any licensed motorcyclist that can pony up the $300-per-day fee.

With a 79.2-inch wheelbase, the V-Rex is similar in length to a raked-out custom chopper. But unlike those over-stretched pieces of steel, the V-Rex's 670-pound claimed dry weight feels low and centralized. This is due, in part, to its unique short steel frame which uses the V-Rod-sourced engine and cast-aluminum fuel tank as stressed members.

In order to keep true to Cameron's sketch, Travert engineered a unique front suspension system that looks and works much like a swingarm/monoshock setup you typically see on the rear-end of most motorcycles. The curious looking front-end utilizes a double-sided cast-aluminum swingarm that holds the front wheel in place. The swingarm pivots on the vertical steering head axis, while damping is provided by an adjustable shock mounted vertically behind front wheel. The end result is a system that retains all the bump absorbing ability that one would expect from a conventional fork, yet it still delivers a light, nimble feel at the handlebars.

Handling rear suspension duties are adjustable twin shocks mounted horizontally beneath the rear of the engine (pulled off of Harley-Davidson's Softail model), while a single-sided aluminum swingarm guides the belt drive to the 280-series Metzeler tire. Travert's rear suspension design absorbs road impurities well, but the rear shock's limited travel means extended rides on the soft saddle will include frequent rest breaks.

Pushing the futuristic-looking cruiser back and forth exposes just how easy the bike maneuvers in low-speed settings. For a motorcycle of such size, its weight feels centered and turning it around in the tight confines of the parking lot was far easier than you would imagine.

Hop aboard and you'll notice how slim the bike is, especially between the rider's legs. The low, form-fitting leather saddle is, initially, one of the most comfortable we've sampled and the reach out to the swept wing-shaped handlebars puts you in a natural, relaxed riding posture. The low forward-mounted footpegs might be a bit of a stretch for shorter riders, but for my body measurements the entire ergonomic package felt well-balanced.

Turning the upside-down mounted key counterclockwise and flipping the Harley-sourced engine switch brings the bike's fuel-injected system online. Thumb the starter and the 1350cc DOHC V-Twin rumbles to life, emitting a healthy bark even at idle. There's no neutral light or any safety-related starting lockout, so caution needs to be exercised when starting. Once in gear, a slip of the hydraulic clutch, a light dab of the throttle and you're underway.

On the road there's no hiding the V-Rex's economy car-like length, but to our surprise it initiates turns and changes directions quite readily. A simple nudge of the handlebar is all that's necessary to get things happening. However, Travertson's unique front-end setup does take a bit of getting use to. Unlike a conventional telescopic motorcycle fork which will dive under braking or when loaded, the V-Rex does the exact opposite. This makes the bike feel like it wants to stand up and run to the outside mid-corner.

Another factor that limits the V-Rex in the handling department is its ground clearance, or more specifically - the lack thereof. The clearance deficiency reduces cornering prowess, especially on right-hand turns. Parts of the exhaust drag at even the most modest lean angle. Fortunately, the Travertson crew recognizes the problem and has an upgrade that they claim will increase ground clearance by 1.5-inches. Problem solved.

Okay, so motoring through the twisties isn't exactly the V-Rex's forte, but luckily straight line cruising definitely is.

Those who have ridden a V-Rod know that the low-end and mid-range can be slightly lackluster compared to the typical Harley mill. But for those of who aren't shy with the throttle, once the engine is revved up higher in the rpm range, the rider is rewarded with a healthy dose of acceleration. In fact, straight-line speeds in excess of 100 mph aren't much of an issue, and the bike's low, stretched length allows plenty of straight-line stability.

The V-Rex rides on a set of machined 18-inch wheels shod in fat Metzeler Marathon touring rubber. Continuing with the V-Rex's eccentric theme is a perimeter-mounted single front disc which gets clamped by a six-piston caliper that was lifted off of a Buell sportbike. Handling rear braking duties is a two-piston caliper pinching a single disc. Stopping power on the V-Rex isn't astounding, but when both brakes are applied, the setup is capable of slowing the machine down in a reasonable amount of distance.

In a sea of cookie-cutter motorcycle mediocrity the V-Rex stands out. Cameron's creation gives us a possible glimpse into the future of motorcycle design, while the Travertson team proves that innovative engineering solutions can be applied to even the most outlandish concepts.

To a motorcyclist looking for a new production cruiser, the $43,900 price tag might seem a bit out of reach. But when you consider that other 'custom' production bikes like Orange County Choppers start at roughly the same price, the forty-grand MSRP doesn't seem so unreasonable.

So you want one now, eh? Well, if you're a person who's always shied away from the limelight, then you might want to choose a different ride because wherever you're at on this one, you're sure to become an instant celebrity - for the V-Rex garners attention from every angle, all of the time.

KAWASAKI MOTORCYCLE NINJA® ZX™-6R

A true race winner, the Ninja® ZX™-6R sportbike captured a 1-2 finish in the 2007 Daytona 200 and placed 1-2 in the 2007 AMA Supersport championship, thanks to a merger of 600-class power and Grand Prix handling. The result is an exciting racetrack weapon capable of cornering speeds previously unknown to the middleweight class while retaining the wide spread of power that is pure Ninja.

To deliver the performance required in the demanding racetrack environ, the Ninja ZX-6R’s ultra-high-rpm 599cc four-cylinder engine cranks out a fat powerband with a linear torque curve and hard-hitting acceleration across the entire rev range. Its impressive healthy mid-range torque and over-rev capability are pure race bike, allowing riders to stay on the gas where lower-revving machines are forced back off and shift.

The Ninja ZX-6R’s engine was specially designed for minimal internal friction, so it is more responsive and allows the rider to easily modify cornering lines with minor throttle adjustments. Utilizing stronger, stiffer and more compact engine components than its predecessors resulted in a slim and compact engine and chassis. Its racing heritage also includes a close-ratio cassette transmission that makes it easy to keep the ZX-6R screaming at its horsepower peak and a slipper clutch for quick downshifts that don’t upset the rest of the chassis.

A compact, lightweight chassis design permits the Ninja ZX-6R to make a fast entry –enhanced by the slipper clutch and powerful radial-mounted front brake calipers –and maintain more cornering speed throughout the turn.

The frame and swingarm were developed with an ideal balance of rigidity, so the bike responds instantly and precisely to the rider’s every command. Mass centralization, engine mount locations and a variety of other factors were optimized to help its instant turn-in characteristics. Once in the turn, the Ninja ZX-6R holds a line with precision and tracks through the apex as if it were on rails. Completing this track-biased package are fully-adjustable front and rear suspension units.

All these features mean very accurate chassis feedback, with the ZX-6R communicating every move directly to the rider. The machine responds more precisely and predictably to control inputs and shifts in body weight. The result is a motorcycle that becomes one with the rider.

The entire package of frame, suspension, engine and bodywork enhances the ZX-6R’s fun-to-ride factor while supplying the high-performance power of a 600cc Supersport racer and the nimble handling of a small-displacement GP machine. The results are faster cornering speeds, quicker lap times and even more worried looks on the competition’s faces. So let the opposition compromise performance for rider-friendliness; the Ninja ZX-6R is a pure expression of Kawasaki’s racing philosophy and is designed to take home trophies.

- Three-piece front fender with light and compact projector beam headlights and integrated front and rear turn signals add up to high aero efficiency
- Small but highly efficient ram air duct
- Exhaust system’s under-engine resonator allows the use of a smaller under-seat muffler, which allows a cleaner tail section further minimizing drag
- Different color panels create a sporty, aggressive image

Riding Position
- Ultra-compact chassis permits a ideal man-machine interface
- Slim fuel tank design makes it easier to grip the tank and seat when hanging off in a turn

Advanced Electronic Instrumentation
- Multifunction odometer, tripmeter, clock and lap timer/stopwatch

YAMAHA MOTORCYCLE 2008 MT-01

Torque Sports.

Sports Torque is a unique kind of motorcycling experience, and the MT-O1 is one of the finest examples of this new breed. Torque Sports performance opens up a new world of sports riding because it offers an alternative to high rpm rush to today's in-line four cylinder supersport bikes. Grab a handful of throttle and discover the arm stretching torque that flows from the MT-01's massive V-Twin powerplant.

The MT-01 is the bike that started the Torque Sports revolution.

Maximum torque is unleashed at a mere 3750 rpms. The MT-01's soul stirring torque is guaranteed to put a smile on your face while the agile sports chassis offers its rider all the exhilaration of a supersport machine. At Yamaha we recognize that as many sport riders mature, they often seek a slightly less extreme alternative. If you are ready to take the next step in sports riding, you owe it to yourself to check out the revolutionary 2008 MT-01.
FEATURES:

High-performance, 1670cc air-cooled, long-stroke, OHV, 4 valves per cylinder, 48°, V-twin powerplant produces massive torque and strong acceleration for an emotionally charged ride.

Traditional pushrod valve actuation keeps engine height down for a lower centre of gravity for great handling and ensures more uniform heat dissipation due to absence of a cam chain case.

One-piece head cover adds rigidity around the rocker arms to provide great high rpm performance and efficient heat dissipation.

Four-valve, pent roof cylinder head design uses two spark plugs per cylinder for efficient combustion and great power delivery at all rpms.

Valve train includes short design intake and exhaust rocker arms that reduce inertia during high-rpm performance.

Twin, crankcase-mounted, high-lift cams ensure strong acceleration and horsepower. The cam profiles and timing are specially designed for the MT-01

Hydraulic valve lifters driven by twin camshafts deliver exceptional performance and lower maintenance requirements.

Crankshaft and connecting rod design is unique to the MT-01. Inertia mass is reduced 18% and weight is reduced by 10% compared to the Warrior crank. The crank flywheel shapes are also different.

Large-diameter pistons feature durable and lightweight forged construction to accommodate higher-rpm performance with reduced vibration and less reciprocating mass.

Larger-bore ceramic composite-plated cylinders provide uniform heat dissipation, reduce weight, reduce friction and increase cylinder service life.

Cooling fin thickness is optimized for maximum heat dissipation, thereby eliminating the need for liquid cooling, maintaining that traditional clean, air-cooled engine appearance. Special lower mounted aluminum air duct directs air toward the cylinders for additional cooling

40mm, twin-bore, downdraft Mikuni AC40 throttle body fuel injection (FI) with throttle position sensor (TPS) ensures optimal fuel delivery, great throttle response, reduced emissions and maximum power. Choke less design means no fuss, sure starts.

12 hole Mikuni injectors provide great fuel / air atomization for maximum power output.

Specially designed air box features a solenoid controlled variable intake to provide excellent throttle response. The inlet duct is forward facing.

State-of-the-art 32 bit Electronic Control Unit (ECU) ensures precisely metered fuel delivery and optimal ignition spark control using 3D mapping for each cylinder to provide maximum performance and response at all rpms.

Dry sump lubrication system means a more compact engine design. The die cast aluminum oil reservoir is mounted low and in front/beside the engine which lowers the centre of gravity for great handling. A handy, spin-on oil filter means fast, easy oil changes.

Smooth-shifting, 5-speed transmission features optimized primary, secondary and gear ratios for excellent power and torque feeling. Ratios are maximized to provide great "real world" spine-tingling roll-on performance at all rpms.

Multi 10-plate wet clutch uses a new Nissin hydraulic master cylinder for easy, consistent lever pull and automatic adjustment of the free play. The fluid reservoir is integrated with the master cylinder for improved appearance. Its compact design makes it less "obtrusive" than the 2006 version. The lever has 4 positions of adjustment to suit various hand sizes.

Under seat high-performance, 2-into-1-into 2 exhaust system features a mix of stainless steel and titanium components. The dual large diameter mufflers boost torque and horsepower while producing a throaty, V-twin growl. The system also utilizes an under seat cooling fan and special heat shields to eliminate any passenger discomfort from hot exhaust components.

Three 3-way catalyizers are integrated into the exhaust system to reduce harmful emissions.

The exhaust system also utilizes a lightweight titanium EXUP exhaust power valve which improves torque character, eliminates "flat spots" and improves overall power output.

Electric starting system features solenoid-activated auto-decompressor for fast, easy starting.

Lightweight aluminum C.F. die cast downtube-type frame offers excellent handling and a clean image due to the lack of visible welds. Frame features a mix of die cast and forged tubes for strength and durability.

The engine is a fully stressed member. Solid-mounted engine centralizes rider/machine mass for quick cornering transitions.

Fully detachable C.F. die cast aluminum subframe means easier rear shock access and reduced costs in the event of a "loop-out".

R1 inspired lightweight under truss-type, aluminum swingarm offers superb rigidity. The swingarm length is optimized to provide excellent stability, traction and handling. The pivot point of the swingarm bolts to the outside of the frame, allowing a narrower frame. The benefit is a slimmer frame, and slimmer seat which reduces overall seat height.

Fully adjustable 43mm inverted fork offers 120mm (4.7") of wheel travel for exceptional sports handling. The adjustable design allows the rider to tailor suspension settings to match weight and road conditions to maximize handling and suspension performance. Adjustments include 5-way spring preload, 20-way compression damping and 25-way rebound damping adjustability.

Beefy, cast aluminum, top and bottom triple clamps help increase fork rigidity and reduce weight.

Link rear suspension utilizes a fully adjustable "piggyback-type" single rear shock. Adjustments include; spring preload, 12-way compression damping and 20-way rebound damping adjustability. The shock is mounted low and behind the engine to centralize mass and keep a low center of gravity for excellent handling wheel travel is 117mm (4.6").

Dual 310mm floating front rotors are squeezed by radial mount, ultra rigid, 6-piston, monoblock calipers, similar to those used on the R1. The brake caliper pistons are aluminum for reduced weight. These brakes provide exceptional stopping power with great lever feel and feedback.

Brembo radial design front master cylinder utilizes a 16mm piston. The lever can be adjusted to suit various hand sizes.

267mm floating rear disc is squeezed by a dual-piston caliper Nissin caliper.

Unique 4-spoke lightweight mag wheels reduce weight and enhance handling qualities. Front rim size is MT 3.50x17 while the rear rim is a wide MT 6.00x17 fitted with tubeless radial tires for awesome handling.

Compact 15 liter steel fuel tank allows the use of tank bags. Low fuel light activates with 3 liters of fuel remaining.

One piece "Buckskin-type" leather seat features a flat profile for excellent rider and passenger comfort. The MT symbol is embossed in the rear of the seat.

Conventional handlebar is used. The conventional design means a comfortable riding position and allows easy, fast handlebar replacement.

Compact, multi-functional centrally mounted instrument features an analogue speedo, digital tach, dual tripmeters, a fuel reserves tripmeter, low fuel light and clock. The brightness of the background illumination and LCDs can be adjusted to suit personal preferences.

Eye catching multi reflector 55/51-watt halogen headlight provides a powerful beam of light.
LED rear tail light with stylish clear lens.

Immobilizer ignition system is designed to reduce the possibility of theft. This system must recognize the "coded ignition key" in order for the unit to start. If the immobilizer ignition does not recognize the key (or a theft's screwdriver or other type of "jimmy tool" the bike will not start even if the ignition is turned or forced into the on position.

Lower fork leg protectors prevent dirt and stone chips from damaging sliders and seals

"O" ring chain

Low-fuel warning light

Fork lock integrated into main ignition switch for extra convenience

4-way adjustable clutch lever and adjustable front brake lever

Low maintenance sealed battery.

The MT-01 offers a significant level of power and performance. It is not intended for novice or inexperienced riders.

Honda CR 125/250R MSD Powersports Manual

Content Inside :

Timing: The Enhancer Ignition allows the user to adjust the ignition timing curve to optimize engine power output. This is done by rotating the potentiometer shaft located on the back of the ignition. Clockwise rotation retards the timing while counterclockwise advances the timing (Figure 1). Coil: The MSD Enhancer Ignition System includes a special Pro CD Coil. This coil has an extremely low primary resistance and a high turns ratio to produce maximum spark energy. The Pro CD Coil is encapsulated in a Rynite compound that is impervious to contaminates and vibration. The MSD Ignition can be mounted anywhere on the motorcycle provided it is away from direct engine heat sources. It is also recommended that if you mount the unit to the front triple clamps that you attach the black ground wire to the frame and not the triple clamps. Bolting the unit to the frame is recommended but not required. COIL It is recommended that a second ground wire (18 gauge BLACK wire supplied) be run from the negative side of the coil (BROWN wire) to the engine cylinder head. This will assure a good path for the spark to follow (Figure 2).

TRIUMPH ROCKET III

The Triumph Rocket III has defined a unique niche in the clone-like performance cruiser market where it sits in a class of its own thanks to its striking looks, stunning performance and incredible specification. At 2294cc it’s the world’s largest capacity production motorcycle. But, despite the impressive capacity of this amazing machine, it was designed first and foremost to be ridden. A good turning circle, seamless fuel injection and a low center of gravity combine to make manoeuvring at low speed surprisingly easy.

Triumph offer an enormous range of genuine accessories for the Rocket III including the new patented adjustable rider backrest.

Details

Engine
The incredible 2.3 liter, in-line, water cooled, triple cylinder engine means that even two-up the Rocket III accelerates incredibly hard without obvious effort.
But despite its size, the engine is incredibly smooth as the balance, input and rear drive shaft contra-rotate against the crankshaft, which makes for minimal torque reaction.

TRIUMPH THRUXTON

The Thruxton draws on the Spartan café racing machines of the sixties and takes its name from the near-mythic racing Triumphs of that era. With its perfectly proportioned evocative silhouette the Thruxton is a truly beautiful machine, which seamlessly mixes the classic sixties style with a modern attitude. The basic essence of motorcycling transcends all technology. What a bike is and represents to the owner is very nearly as important as what it does. All that’s really needed, for many, are an engine, two wheels, a seat and a pair of handlebars. The Thruxton captures that spirit.

Features

Engine
The Thruxton’s 865cc, air-cooled, twin cylinder power plant, the most powerful of Triumph’s twin cylinder line-up, has a peak power output of 69bhp delivered at 7400rpm and peak torque of 52ft.lbf arrives at 5800rpm. The engine shares the same 360° firing interval as the Bonneville, as well as featuring ‘hot’ camshaft profiles and a compression ratio of 9.2:1.

TRIUMPH TIGER

The Tiger, with its mile-munching ability and sheer dependability, has won a legion of fans the world over. It lives in a genuinely different space to other bikes in its class, excelling in three distinct areas – it scratches; it tours and it commutes. While its sharp lines and performance spec make the Tiger’s sporting credentials clear from a glance, its stunning looks hide a practical streak. Two-up, you’ve got a bike that comfortably devours miles of tarmac thanks to the relaxed riding position, spacious seat, supple suspension and tractable torquey engine. Back in the city the commanding view really comes into its own, while the wide bars make tight manoeuvres child’s play.

Features

Engine
The Tiger’s engine delivers power and ear to ear grins. Nothing sounds like a triple so there’s no confusing a Tiger with the whine of an anonymous four. The amazing 1050cc, fuel-injected, three cylinder engine, known for its addictive character, has plenty of torque and impressive amounts of horsepower, with ample reserves of both for those two-up fully laden tours. Peak power of 114bhp is delivered at 9400rpm, with 74ft.lbf torque at 6250rpm.

TRIUMOH SCRAMBLER

The Scrambler represents a fresh take on the iconic bikes from Triumph’s past. Combining inspiration from the relaxed culture and laid back attitude of sunny California with the chic approach of Southern Europeans, the Scrambler redefines the off-road machines made famous by 60’s thrill seekers such as Steve McQueen and places many elements of their robust, dual purpose style into a contemporary urban context. The authentic styling of the Scrambler is what makes the motorcycle so unique, yet the technology is as modern as it can be.

Chassis
With a strong tubular steel cradle frame and supple front and rear suspension (41mm telescopic forks and twin chromed spring preload-adjustable rear shocks) the Scrambler is built tough, to iron out the bumps. Its high, wide handlebars and high-set footpegs further aid control and low-speed manoeuvrability. Steering geometry is set at 27.8° of rake, with 105mm of trail and a wheelbase of 1500mm. Twin piston calipers are used for both brakes, the front working a single 310mm disc, the rear a 255mm disc, for ample stopping power.

Engine
The Scrambler’s air-cooled, parallel twin cylinder engine offers a cubic capacity of 865cc for excellent midrange torque. Both pistons rise and fall together via a 360° crankshaft firing interval so the classic character of a British twin-cylinder engine is retained, whilst twin balancer shafts provide civility and refinement. 90% of peak torque is maintained from around 2500rpm through to redline providing smooth, effortless acceleration throughout the five gears.
